On your first appointment, you will receive a thorough examination of your teeth, facial structure and jaw relations. The doctors will inform you of any orthodontic needs and will give you a general idea of your treatment plan. Treatment time, costs and any questions you have will be discussed during this first visit. This appointment will be without charge to you and your family and will allow us the opportunity to get to know you and your orthodontic needs.
Patient Responsibilities
For the treatment to go as well as possible, the patient must take on several important responsibilities:
- Oral Hygiene: Throughout treatment, the patient must keep his or her teeth as clean as possible. This requires carefully brushing several times a day and flossing daily. We will instruct each patient on home care. Brush after meals, being sure to clean all aspects of the teeth, as well as massaging the gums. The part of the teeth between the braces and the gum is the most critical part where decay may occur. There is no substitute for a fresh, clean mouth and shining teeth. We will grade your hygiene at every visit.
- Eating Habits: Although the braces are placed carefully, eating the wrong kinds of food can loosen them. Therefore we ask all of our patients not to eat hard or sticky foods.
- Cooperation: During treatment, elastics or appliances are often used to generate focuses to move the teeth. If so, it is essential that they be worn. It’s simple; teeth move if they are worn and don’t move if they are not worn. Patient cooperation is essential for proper treatment results!
Family Program
When a patient becomes a part of our practice, we feel a responsibility to the entire family. In a continuing effort to provide quality orthodontics, we provide a comprehensive orthodontic examination to all family members at no charge. We prefer to see the patient for the first time at age seven, when the permanent teeth start to erupt. As you know, early treatment can often minimize future orthodontic problems and maximize our treatment results. When any additional family member begins treatment, there will be a $200 fee reduction in their total treatment fee.
As a family care provider, we welcome family members of all ages. If Mom or Dad has an orthodontic concern that may not have been addressed at an earlier age, we encourage them to take the opportunity to seek out their options in orthodontics.

In order to help our patients fulfill their treatment goals, we give out Harwell Bucks at regular visits for excellent cooperation. The number of bucks you receive depends on your cooperation. The bucks may be saved and redeemed for gift certificates, walkmans and other prizes. This is our way of saying, “Thank you for being such a good patient.”
Rules for the Harwell Bucks Program
During treatment, patients can receive Harwell Bucks:
- By being on time.
- By displaying good oral hygiene.
- By not having any broken or loose braces, wires or appliances.
- By wearing elastics as instructed.
- By wearing your T-shirt to the appointment.
- By sending the office a postcard from any of your summer adventures: vacation, camp or even from home! (Summer only)
Every six months you can also earn 10 Harwell Bucks for the “Certificate of Cleaning” you received at the beginning of treatment.

You will have the option to cash in your Bucks at the time you earn them, or you can save them for bigger prizes. At no time can your Bucks be taken away from you, but your cooperation at each regularly scheduled appointment will determine how many Bucks you receive. (No Bucks will be given at emergency appointments) It will be your responsibility to keep your Bucks until you are ready to cash them in for a prize. We are not responsible for lost, stolen or misplaced Bucks. Bucks must be turned in to redeem a prize. Bucks have no cash value. If we forget to give you the Bucks you deserve, just ask for them before you leave the office.
